What is Sleepward?
Sleepward is a free bedtime routine app for iPhone that gives your day a clear ending in about four minutes. You empty your head into a private Brain Dump, pick up to three things for tomorrow, enjoy an evening that is actually yours, then wind down with calming sounds.
It never scores your sleep and never breaks a chain. It just makes stopping a little easier.
A bedtime routine that fits a real evening
An example night from the app's own planner. Set your own times; Sleepward never adds time onto a late night.
- Evening reset. Brain Dump, then tomorrow's three things: one main thing, one small task, one optional extra. Or none.
- Your Hour. 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes that are just yours. Show a calm countdown only if you want one.
- Wind down. A gradually darkening screen, an editable routine (dim lights, read, prepare tomorrow's things) and free white, pink or brown noise with a fade-out timer.
- Bed. Put the phone down. In the morning, an optional one-tap check-in with four faces.
Your evening always ends before your bedtime. That is the whole design.
Inside Sleepward

Why writing tomorrow down can help you switch off
In a small sleep-lab study of 57 young adults, people who spent five minutes writing a to-do list at bedtime fell asleep faster than people who wrote about tasks they had already done (Scullin et al., Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2018). One study is not a guarantee, but it is why Sleepward starts with a list for tomorrow.
The NHS (2024) suggests relaxing for at least an hour before bed and not using devices like smartphones right before going to bed. The CDC (2024) lists 7 or more hours as the need for adults aged 18 to 60. That is why the wind-down screen ends by telling you to put the phone down.

One choice we made: no streaks
Most habit apps run on a chain you are afraid to break. For sleep, that backfires: worrying about a streak at midnight is the opposite of winding down. So nothing in Sleepward ever resets. Grace Nights cover missed evenings, and Minimal Mode strips it all back to one action, one timer and one Finish button.
Honest limits
- Not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat insomnia.
- The wake-up reminder is a notification, not an alarm. Keep your Clock alarm.
- It reads sleep from Apple Health but never writes to it.
- World chapters 2 to 13 and studio soundscapes need Pro.
Pick something else if you want sleep scores or snore recording. A dedicated sleep tracker does that; we chose not to.
Bedtime routine app questions
What is the best bedtime routine app?
One short enough that you will actually do it. Sleepward's evening reset is four minutes and three optional steps: a brain dump, tomorrow's three things, then wind down. If you want sleep scores and smart alarms, a sleep tracker suits you better; Sleepward never scores your sleep.
Is Sleepward free?
Yes, the core is free forever: the evening reset, Brain Dump, tomorrow's three things, Your Hour, wind-down, routines, Minimal Mode, sleep logs, Apple Health reading, morning check-ins, white, pink and brown noise, the Moon Fox and the first world chapter. Sleepward Pro adds all 13 chapters, 8 studio soundscapes with a 3-layer mixer and more, at $9.99 a month, $49.99 a year (7-day trial for eligible new subscribers) or $99.99 once. Prices may vary by region.
Why do I stay up late even when I'm tired?
Often because the evening is the only time that feels like yours. Sleepward was built for exactly that: Your Hour protects 15 to 60 minutes of personal time and always ends before the bedtime you chose, so you get the evening without losing the night.
What happens if I skip a night?
Nothing resets. There is no streak to break, Grace Nights cover missed evenings, and the Moon Fox never gets sad. You can also switch the fox and world off entirely.
Can Sleepward wake me up?
It has an optional wake-up reminder, but it is a time-sensitive notification, not a system alarm. Silent mode or Focus can quiet it, so keep your Clock alarm for anything important.
Does Sleepward treat insomnia?
No. It is a routine and journaling tool, not a medical device, and it does not diagnose or treat any sleep condition. If sleep problems persist, talk to a qualified healthcare professional.
Close today, tonight
