What is a good bedtime routine for college students?

A good bedtime routine for a college student is short, starts at a fixed time counted back from your first class, and ends the day on paper before it ends on your phone. Clear your head, protect a bit of time that is only yours, then wind down for 15 minutes. That is the whole plan.

The numbers say most students need it. The CDC (page reviewed 2023) recommends 7 or more hours of sleep a night for adults 18 to 60, and 8 to 10 hours for teens 13 to 17, which still covers many first-years. In a nationally representative study of dorm students in Sleep Health (2019), 29% of students living in dorms slept under 7 hours, and 41% woke up unrested on at least four days a week.

Count back from the first class. Everything else in a student bedtime routine is detail.

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.

How the class-time answer above is worked out

The tool at the top uses three plain rules, and you can do the same sum on a napkin:

StepRule we used8 a.m. example
Wake-up70 minutes before class: shower, food, the walk across campus6:50 a.m.
Lights out8 hours before wake-up, so 7+ hours of actual sleep is realistic10:50 p.m.
Wind-down15 minutes, screen dimming, noise on10:35 p.m.
Your Hour45 minutes that end before wind-down9:50 p.m.
Evening reset4 minutes: Brain Dump, then tomorrow's three9:46 p.m.

Why eight hours in bed and not seven? Nobody falls asleep the second the light goes off, and a dorm hallway is not silent. Leaving a cushion is the difference between "7 or more hours" on paper and in real life. If your morning is faster, shorten the 70 minutes; just keep the eight.

Phones are the obvious trap. The CDC (page reviewed 2023) suggests turning devices off at least 30 minutes before bed, and a 2025 study of 45,000+ Norwegian students in Frontiers in Psychiatry found each extra hour of screen use after going to bed went with 59% higher odds of insomnia symptoms and about 24 minutes less sleep. The link looked the same for social media and other screen activities, and the design cannot prove cause, but the direction is clear enough to plan around.

Your first week of a student bedtime routine

Seven nights, one new piece each night, built around a normal semester week. You do not need the app for most of it, but every step maps to a Sleepward screen if you want one.

  1. Night 1 · Sun

Set the end of your night

Open Sleepward and answer one question: when does your night end? Enter the bedtime you are aiming for and your wake-up time. Then run the evening reset once, start to finish, so you know it really is four minutes.

  2. Night 2 · Mon

Park the syllabus in your head

Brain Dump every assignment, email and worry as separate entries. Then pick tomorrow's three: one main thing (the problem set), one small task (email the TA), one optional extra. Everything else stays parked.

  3. Night 3 · Tue

    Take Your Hour without guilt

Choose 30 or 45 minutes of Your Hour for games, a show or a call home. It always ends before the bedtime you chose, so the evening you protect does not eat the sleep you need.

  4. Night 4 · Wed

    Roommate night

Start white, pink or brown noise before your roommate's light goes off and set the fade-out timer. A mask helps too. Agree a lights-low time once, out loud, instead of every night.

  5. Night 5 · Fri

Let the exception be an exception

Going out? Use Minimal Mode (one action, one timer, one Finish button) or skip the night. Grace Nights mean nothing resets and the Moon Fox is never sad about it.

  6. Night 6 · Sat

    Guard the wake-up time

Sleep in a little if you must, but keep wake-up close to weekdays. The CDC's first sleep tip is the same bedtime and wake time every day, weekends included.

  7. Night 7 · Sun

    Keep what worked

Glance at your optional sleep log (estimates are clearly labeled, and you can hide every number). Drop any step that felt like homework. The routine you keep beats the routine you admire.

One new piece a night. By Sunday you have a routine, not a resolution.

How Sleepward runs the evening in 3 steps

  1. Clear your head. Brain Dump everything as separate entries you can edit later, then pick up to three things for tomorrow, or none.
  2. Take Your Hour. 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or your own length, ending before your bedtime. A countdown only if you want one.
  3. Wind down. A darkening screen, an editable routine (dim lights, read, lay out tomorrow's things) and free white, pink or brown noise with a sleep timer. Then put the phone down.

Proof: what those screens look like

Sleepward screen asking When does your night end with bedtime 11:00 PM, wake-up 7:00 AM and personal time choices from 15 to 90 minutes
Night 1: set when your night ends.
Sleepward Brain Dump step reading Empty your head with three short entries typed in
Night 2: the Brain Dump, step 1 of 3.
Sleepward Tomorrow step with one main priority, one smaller task and one optional extra
Tomorrow's three: main, small, optional.
Sleepward sound list with white, pink and brown noise and locked studio soundscapes, plus a fade-out timer
Night 4: noise for roommate nights. Locked sounds are Pro.

Sleepward vs a sleep tracker vs winging it

Winging it

Free and flexible. Also how "one more episode" becomes 2 a.m. Nothing ends the day for you.

A sleep tracker

Measures the night after it happens and often gives it a score. Good if you love data, less good if numbers keep you up.

Sleepward (ours)

Works on the evening before sleep. Never scores your sleep, never breaks a chain, and you can hide every number.

One decision we made on purpose: there is no streak to lose. Student weeks are lumpy. A routine that punishes the night before a deadline is one you delete in October, so Grace Nights keep your world exactly where you left it.

Honest limits, and who should pick something else

Student bedtime questions

What is a good bedtime for a college student?

Count back from when you have to be up. The CDC recommends 7 or more hours of sleep for adults 18 to 60 and 8 to 10 hours for teens 13 to 17, so a student who wakes at 7:00 needs to be asleep by about midnight at the latest, and earlier is kinder.

How long should a bedtime routine take?

Shorter than you think. Sleepward's evening reset is about four minutes; the rest of the evening is yours. A routine that takes an hour is a routine you will skip during finals.

How do I sleep when my roommate stays up late?

Agree on a lights-low time, use a sleep mask, and cover voices with steady noise. Sleepward includes free white, pink and brown noise with a fade-out sleep timer; studio soundscapes like rain and ocean are part of Pro.

Should I stop using my phone before bed?

The CDC suggests turning devices off at least 30 minutes before bedtime. In a 2025 study of Norwegian students, each extra hour of screen use after going to bed went with higher odds of insomnia symptoms and about 24 minutes less sleep, whatever the screen activity was.

Can Sleepward wake me up for an 8 a.m. class?

Do not rely on it. Sleepward's optional wake-up reminder is a time-sensitive notification, not a system alarm, and Silent mode or Focus can quiet it. Keep your Clock alarm.

Is Sleepward free for students?

The evening reset, Brain Dump, tomorrow's three things, Your Hour, wind-down, white, pink and brown noise, sleep logs and the first world chapter are free. Sleepward Pro ($9.99 a month, $49.99 a year or $99.99 lifetime in the US) adds the other 12 chapters and studio soundscapes.

What if my sleep is still bad after a few weeks?

A routine app is not treatment. If you are struggling to fall or stay asleep for weeks, talk to your campus health service or a clinician.
