How do you stop revenge bedtime procrastination after work?
Keep the me-time, but close the workday on paper first, start your own time early in the evening and give it a fixed end, so sleep stops being the price. Bedtime procrastination means going to bed later than you intended with nothing actually stopping you, and it's linked to getting too little sleep (Kroese et al., 2014).

Questions about staying up late after work
What is revenge bedtime procrastination?
It's staying up later than you meant to, with nothing stopping you from going to bed, to get time that feels like yours. Researchers define bedtime procrastination as failing to go to bed at the intended time without external reasons (Kroese et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2014). "Revenge" is the popular label for doing it because the day had no time for you.
Why do people with long workdays do it so much?
When work takes the day, the evening is the only time nobody asks anything of you. Going to bed feels like handing it back to work. Staying up takes some time back, even when it costs sleep.
Is it bad for your health?
It cuts into sleep. In the original 177-person study, more bedtime procrastination was linked to reports of insufficient sleep (Kroese et al., 2014). The CDC says adults 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours a night (CDC, 2024).
How do I stop staying up late for me-time?
Don't try to give up the me-time. Move it and give it an end: close the workday on paper first, protect a set stretch as soon as you're home and fed, and let a timer end it rather than willpower.
Does Sleepward track my sleep?
Only if you want: log approximate bed and wake times or read Apple Health (it never writes to Health), and hide all numbers. It never scores your sleep.
Is Sleepward free?
The evening reset, Brain Dump, tomorrow's three things, Your Hour, wind-down, white, pink and brown noise, Minimal Mode and sleep logs are free forever. Sleepward Pro ($9.99/month, $49.99/year or $99.99 lifetime) adds the full nighttime world and studio soundscapes.
How Sleepward does it, in 3 steps
- Step one?
- Close the day. A four-minute evening reset: Brain Dump everything, pick up to three things for tomorrow. The rest stays parked.
- Then my time?
- Your Hour. 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or your own length, and it always ends before the bedtime you chose.
- And after?
- Wind down. A darkening screen, an editable routine, free white, pink or brown noise with a fade-out timer. Then the phone goes down.
Same evening, two endings
Revenge mode
Home 7:45. Dinner, "quick" inbox check, chores. Me-time starts 10:40, ends at 1:05 a.m. because nothing ended it.
With an ending
Home 7:45. Dinner. Four-minute reset 8:30. Your Hour 8:35 to 9:35. Wind-down. Lights out 10:30, alarm 6:30: 8 hours.
Your evening, worked out
Uses the CDC's 7 or more hours for adults 18 to 60 (CDC, 2024), a 4-minute reset and a 30-minute wind-down.
A Wednesday, told in texts
Off at 7. Finally home. Starting my game.
ok it's 12:50. how.
Next time dump the work stuff first, put the game in the hour, and give it an end.
Thursday: hour from 8:35. Ended 9:35. In bed 10:30. Weird how it didn't feel stolen.
An invented example.
Honest limits
- Sleepward is a routine and journaling tool, not a medical device. It doesn't diagnose or treat insomnia.
- Free covers everything on this page. Pro adds the full 13-chapter world and studio soundscapes; you can preview every sound free first.
- Pick something else if you work night shifts or rotating shifts. Sleepward assumes a bedtime that stays roughly the same.
One decision we made: the Moon Fox never gets sad when you miss a night, and nothing resets. Guilt isn't a bedtime tool.
