Q
How often should you strength train on a GLP-1?
Two or three days a week, working every major muscle group each time, is the range most guidance points to for beginners. The CDC adult guidelines (2023) set the floor at 2 days; the ACSM position stand on resistance training (2009) puts novices at 2 to 3. Nothing about GLP-1 medicines changes that count, but it raises the stakes: lean mass is part of the weight you lose.
Two is the floor, three is the beginner ceiling.

8 facts on strength training frequency, with sources
- 2+ days
CDC adult guidelines (2023): adults need muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups: legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms.
- 2–3 days
ACSM position stand on resistance training (2009): the recommended frequency for novice training is 2 to 3 days a week, with loads around an 8 to 12 repetition maximum.
- Each muscle group
ACSM position stand on exercise quantity and quality (2011): on 2 to 3 days a week, adults should do resistance exercises for each of the major muscle groups, plus balance, agility and coordination work.
- 2 > 1
Schoenfeld and colleagues, Sports Medicine (2016): in a meta-analysis, training a muscle twice a week produced better muscle growth than once a week when total volume was matched.
- ~10% lean mass
Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024): weight loss on incretin medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide includes a rapid loss of lean mass of about 10%, roughly 6 kg.
- A decade
Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024): the authors compare that lean-mass loss to a decade or more of aging, and propose tailored resistance exercise alongside the medication.
- ~3 kg back
Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024): supervised resistance training lasting more than 10 weeks produced about 3 kg of lean mass and about 25% more strength, in men and women.
- Twice a week
NHS home strength routine (reviewed 2024): the NHS home strength routine asks you to do its exercises at least twice a week.

Q
One, two, three or five days a week?
1 day
Below the CDC's 2-day floor. Fine as a restart week.
2 days
Meets the CDC guideline. Twice beat once in the 2016 meta-analysis.
3 days
Top of the ACSM beginner range. Leave a day between.
5 days
Usually a split routine for experienced lifters, not a first month.
A
What your 20-second week means
The game above checks two things. The count is sourced: under 2 days is below the CDC guideline, 2 to 3 sits in the ACSM beginner range, and 4 or more is more than beginners need. The spacing note is our own rule of thumb, not a medical rule: with full-body sessions, a day between them makes the next one feel fresh.
| Template | Days | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Two-day | Mon, Thu | Months 1 and 2, busy weeks |
| Three-day | Mon, Wed, Fri | Once two days feel routine |
| Two plus one | Tue, Sat + a 5-minute day | Shift work, travel weeks |

Honest limits
- Most frequency research was done in general adult populations, not specifically in people taking GLP-1 medicines.
- Guidelines count days and muscle groups. They do not tell you what weight to lift; that is learned set by set.
- Sturdy shows what you record. It cannot measure muscle or bone, and it does not give medication advice.
- Free covers weekly planning, all three workout types and the core movement library. Sturdy Pro adds gym-equipment movements, 45-minute sessions and longer progress views.
A decision we made: a missed day in Sturdy is simply unfilled. We did not build streaks, because guilt is a bad reason to train through a rough medication week.
This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician. Sturdy is for adults using prescribed medication under medical care.
Q
A beginner's week, told plainly
Picture someone three weeks into a prescription who has never touched a dumbbell. Monday: a 20-minute Standard strength session at home with a chair, a wall and a backpack. Tuesday: a walk. Wednesday: nothing, and that is planned. Thursday: the same session, two more chair squats than Monday, written down. Saturday: Recovery & Mobility while the coffee brews. That is two strength days, every major muscle group, inside the guidelines, and no gym membership.
Boring weeks, repeated, are the whole plan.

Q
Strength training frequency: questions
Is once a week enough strength training on a GLP-1?
It is better than nothing, but it falls short of the CDC adult guidelines (2023), which call for 2 or more days. A meta-analysis by Schoenfeld and colleagues, Sports Medicine (2016) also found twice a week beat once a week for muscle growth.
Can I strength train every day on a GLP-1?
For a beginner it is more than you need. The ACSM position stand on resistance training (2009) recommends 2 to 3 days a week for novices. Walking or mobility work fits the other days.
How long should each session be?
Guidelines count days and muscle groups, not minutes. Sturdy's Standard strength sessions can be set to 20 minutes, and the free tier allows sessions up to 30 minutes.
When will I see results?
In the trials summarized by Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024), supervised programs ran more than 10 weeks before lean-mass and strength gains were measured. Think in months, not weeks.
Does walking count as strength training?
No. Walking counts toward aerobic activity. The CDC adult guidelines (2023) list muscle-strengthening as a separate weekly target.
Should I train on the day of my injection?
That is a question for your prescriber, especially if you have side effects on certain days. Sturdy can show your medication records next to your plan, but it never gives medication advice.
