How should men on a GLP-1 start strength training?
Start with two short full-body sessions in week one, light enough to finish every rep with good form, and add a third only once those feel routine. The CDC adult guidelines (2023) ask for muscle-strengthening on 2 or more days a week that works the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms.
The reason it matters more on these medicines: Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024) estimate that weight loss on incretin drugs includes about 10% of lean mass, roughly 6 kg. Lifting is how you ask your body to keep it.
Two sessions you finish beat five you plan.
What does week one look like, day by day?
This is the week the phone above loops through, written out. Dates are for the first full week of 2027.
| Day | Session | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mon Jan 4 | Standard strength · 20 min | Session one. Whole body, slow and controlled, stop with reps left in the tank. |
| Tue Jan 5 | Rest or a walk | Nothing to log. Soreness tomorrow is normal; sharp pain is not. |
| Wed Jan 6 | Quick Movement · about 5 min | Five minutes on a busy day still counts as showing up. |
| Thu Jan 7 | Standard strength · 20 min | Session two. Same moves as Monday; write down what you used. |
| Fri Jan 8 | Rest | Rest days are part of the plan, not a gap in it. |
| Sat Jan 9 | Recovery & Mobility | Easy range-of-motion work for hips, shoulders and back. |
| Sun Jan 10 | Check-in · 30-sec chair stand | Optional baseline. You record the number; Sturdy keeps the history. |
The Sunday check-in is the 30-second chair stand, based on the CDC STEADI protocol. It is optional, and Sturdy shows your own numbers with no scores or age norms.
Write down Monday's numbers so Thursday has something to beat.
The mistakes men make in a first week
- Starting where you left off at 25. Old numbers are not this week's numbers. The American College of Sports Medicine position stand (2009) puts novice loads around an 8 to 12 rep max; leave reps in reserve.
- Only pushing. Chest and arms feel like strength. Squats, hinges and pulls carry most of the load in daily life.
- Treating rest as failure. In Sturdy a missed day is simply unfilled, never a failure.
- Ignoring food. Appetite is often lower on these medicines. Ask your care team about a protein target, then log it.
Lift light, pull as much as you push, and let rest days count.
GLP-1 strength training for men: questions
How many days a week should a man on a GLP-1 strength train?
The CDC adult guidelines (2023) call for muscle-strengthening on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups. For beginners, the American College of Sports Medicine position stand (2009) recommends 2 to 3 days a week. Week 1 here uses two full sessions and one 5-minute session.
Why does strength training matter more on a GLP-1?
Weight loss on these medicines includes lean mass. A review by Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024) estimates the loss at about 10%, or about 6 kg, which the authors compare to a decade or more of aging, and proposes resistance exercise alongside the medication.
Can resistance training actually rebuild muscle?
Yes. The same review (Locatelli and colleagues, Diabetes Care (2024)) reports that supervised resistance training lasting more than 10 weeks produced gains of about 3 kg of lean mass and about 25% in strength, in men and in women.
Should I lift heavy in my first week?
No. The American College of Sports Medicine position stand (2009) uses loads around an 8 to 12 repetition maximum for novices, which means a weight you could lift 8 to 12 times. In Week 1, stop a few reps before that point and learn the movement.
Do I need a gym membership?
No. Sturdy's free tier includes the core movement library and sessions up to 30 minutes. Gym-equipment movements and 45-minute sessions are part of Sturdy Pro.
What if I feel dizzy or have pain during a session?
Stop. Sturdy's listing says to check with your clinician before exercising if you have a medical condition, recent injury, dizziness or pain, and the app lets you end a session any time.
Does Sturdy tell me what dose to take?
Never. Sturdy can store medication records you enter, but it does not suggest doses or change schedules. Your prescriber manages the medication.
How Sturdy runs week one, in 3 steps
- Set the week. Pick training days, session length, equipment and experience. Sturdy builds a weekly plan you can move, shorten, skip or repeat.
- Follow the player. Each movement shows a timer, rep guidance and rest breaks. Flag a sore area before you start and those movements are swapped out.
- Log what matters. Protein by meal, the loads and effort you recorded, and optional check-ins. Everything stays on your iPhone, no account.

Sturdy vs. a classic January gym program
Classic January program
Four or five days, heavy compound lifts, built for men who already lift. Great if that is you.
Sturdy Week 1
Two 20-minute sessions, one 5-minute day, home or gym. Built for adults on weight-management medication.
Walking only
Good for your heart; it does not cover the 2 strength days the CDC asks for.
Who should pick something else: if you already lift three or more days a week, keep your program and use a training log. And if you have a heart condition, a recent injury or dizziness, talk to your clinician first. Sturdy is for adults using prescribed medication under medical care.
A decision we made: difficulty only changes when you choose. No algorithm will add weight because you had a good Tuesday.
This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.
Monday, January 4. Session one.
