Am I too young for perimenopause?

Probably not too young to ask: most people notice perimenopause in their 40s, some as early as their 30s, and menopause before 45 has its own name, early menopause. The National Institute on Aging (2024) says most women begin the transition between 45 and 55, and the WHO (2024) gives the same 45-55 window for natural menopause. "Most" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician, and see a doctor promptly if you are under 40 and your periods have stopped or changed.

Your age makes perimenopause more or less likely. It doesn't rule it out.

Who this page is not for

If you have heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, periods less than 21 days apart, or bleeding after 12 months without a period, don't read further first. Mayo Clinic (2026) lists all of these as reasons to see your healthcare professional.

And if you want an app that diagnoses perimenopause, My Midlife Story isn't it. It keeps your notes. A clinician reads them.

A made-up morning at 41

Third night of waking at 3 a.m. this month. A hot face in a cold meeting room. Two lost words in one sentence. Each feels too small to mention.

So it gets one tap each: Poor sleep, Hot flash, Foggy, saved with a date and time. Three weeks later, the list isn't small any more.

The appointment is ten minutes long. The one-page brief says: main concern, three questions, the notes she chose. Small notes add up to a clear story.

How to bring it up in 3 steps

  1. Write it down for a few weeks. Mayo Clinic (2026) suggests a journal of your cycles plus your symptoms, including ones that seem unrelated. One tap per moment is enough.
  2. Pick one main concern and up to three questions. "Could this be perimenopause at my age?" is a fair first question. So is "What else should we rule out?"
  3. Bring one page, not your whole phone. My Midlife Story turns the notes you choose into an editable visit brief and PDF. Every line links back to your original note.

Preview, edit, print or share. You decide.

One design decision: missing days stay unknown, not symptom-free. If you only log on bad days, the app won't pretend the other days were fine.

Perimenopause in your 30s and 40s: questions

Can perimenopause start in your 30s?

It can. Mayo Clinic (2026) says most people notice signs in their 40s, but some notice changes as early as their 30s or as late as their 50s.

What is the youngest age for perimenopause?

There's no fixed youngest age. The NHS (2025) defines early menopause as before 45 and premature menopause as before 40. If you're under 40 with symptoms, see a doctor rather than waiting.

How is perimenopause diagnosed?

Usually from your age, your periods and your symptoms. The NHS (2026) says there's no routine test, and Mayo Clinic (2026) says there's no single test or symptom. For under-45s, the NHS (2025) says a GP may sometimes do blood tests.

What should I write down before my appointment?

Mayo Clinic (2026) suggests keeping a journal of your cycles for the past few months, writing down symptoms (even ones that seem unrelated) and bringing a list of questions.

What else can cause these symptoms?

Lots of things, including thyroid problems, which Mayo Clinic (2026) notes are usually checked. That's why a clinician, not an app or a quiz, should make the call.

Can My Midlife Story diagnose perimenopause?

No. It organizes your own notes and questions and makes a one-page visit brief. It does not diagnose, recommend treatment or say one thing caused another.

Is My Midlife Story free?

Yes for the core: one-tap logging, history, search, visit briefs, PDF export, reminders and encrypted backup, with no account. Optional Premium adds period comparisons, grouped Replays, advanced visit briefs and more.
