What to do when a doctor dismisses perimenopause symptoms

Go back with one specific sentence (what, how often, for how long, what it affects), ask what your options are, and ask for the conversation to be noted in your record. The NHS (reviewed 2026) says there is no routine test for perimenopause, so a clear description is your evidence.

Specific beats polite, and specific can still be polite.

Three calm lines if you feel brushed off

  1. “Could you note in my record that I raised these symptoms today?”
  2. “If it isn't perimenopause, what else could explain this, and how would we check?”
  3. “Is there someone with a special interest in menopause I could see?”

Who this is not for

If your bleeding has become heavier than before, you have any bleeding after 12 months without a period, or you have a fast heartbeat, contact your GP rather than waiting to build a card: the NHS symptoms page (2026) lists these as reasons to get in touch. And if you want an app that tells you whether it is perimenopause, this is not it; nothing here diagnoses.

How it works in 3 steps

  1. Tap Hot flash, Foggy or Poor sleep when it happens; the time is saved.
  2. Before the visit, pick a main concern and up to three questions.
  3. Preview and edit the one-page brief, then print or share it.

Honest limits

A decision we made: every line in the brief links back to your original note, so nobody, including you, has to wonder where a claim came from.

Dismissed perimenopause symptoms: questions

Is there a blood test that proves perimenopause?

The NHS (reviewed 2026) says there's no routine test for perimenopause and menopause; a doctor may diagnose it based on your age and symptoms. That makes a clear description of your symptoms the main evidence you bring.

Why do perimenopause symptoms get brushed off?

We cannot speak for any clinic. Two things make it harder: there is no routine test, and the NHS symptoms page (2026) says symptoms are different for everyone, from a big impact on daily life to hardly any symptoms at all. Vague descriptions are easy to set aside; specific ones are not.

What age does perimenopause start?

The National Institute on Aging (2024) says most women begin the menopausal transition between ages 45 and 55, and that symptoms can last between two and eight years. It can start earlier.

What if my doctor still says no?

Ask to have your concern noted in your record, ask what else could explain the symptoms, and ask about seeing a clinician with a special interest in menopause. Our guide on how to find a menopause specialist covers routes in the US and UK.

Is the card I build here saved or sent anywhere?

No. It is built in your browser and disappears when you close the page. Write it down or screenshot it.

Is My Midlife Story free?

Yes. Logging, history, search, visit briefs, PDF export, reminders and encrypted backup are free with no account. Optional Premium adds comparisons between periods, Replays, advanced visit briefs and Playbooks.
