What should you do after you relapse on vaping?

Treat it as information, not a verdict: get the vape out of reach, write down what set it off, and choose your next quit step today rather than "someday". Smokefree.gov (checked November 2026) puts it plainly: if you slip up and vape, think of it as a temporary setback, you're not back to square one, and learn from it.

One slip is a data point. Six bad assumptions turn it into a month.

The one-minute slip debrief

Four taps. It tells you whether this was a lapse or a relapse, using the NHS definitions, and which of the mistakes below to fix first.

1. How much have you vaped since quitting?
2. Where did the vape come from?
3. What was happening?
4. How are you thinking about it?

6 relapse mistakes, and the fix for each

  1. Calling a lapse a relapse

The NHS draws the line clearly: "just one puff" is a lapse; going back to regular use is a relapse. Treating one hit as total failure is how a lapse becomes a relapse.

Fix: name it accurately. One slip, logged, then back to the plan tonight.

  2. Resetting everything to day zero

Your current stretch restarts. Your total vape-free days, the cravings you beat and what you learned don't vanish.

Fix: count total days, not just the streak. CraveBreaker keeps your original quit date, total vape-free days and milestones when you record a vape.

  3. Keeping a "just in case" vape

A kept vape turns a two-minute craving into a two-second decision. Smokefree.gov suggests throwing away vapes, chargers and pods to remove the physical reminders.

Fix: bin the device and the pods today, including the backup in the car.

  4. Skipping the "what happened?"

Both Smokefree.gov and the NHS say the same thing: a slip is a chance to learn what triggered it. The NHS suggests writing your plan for that trigger down and putting it somewhere visible, like the fridge.

Fix: log the situation, the feeling and what you'd do differently. That's the whole debrief.

  5. Going back to willpower alone

The NHS lists stress, tough situations and quitting on willpower alone as reasons relapses happen, and says that, for smoking, people are 3 times more likely to quit for good with professional help.

Fix: add one kind of help: a quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW in the US), a friend who knows, or a doctor if you want to ask about medication.

  6. Swapping the vape for cigarettes

Some people "bridge" a craving with a cigarette. Smokefree.gov advises planning not to use any tobacco products while quitting vaping.

Fix: put cigarettes on the same list as the vape: not in the house, not "just this once".

Five ways to restart, compared

Restart tonight

Best after a single lapse. Bin the vape, log the slip, carry on.

New quit date

After a full relapse. The NHS suggests a date within the next two weeks, so you can plan.

Cut back first

If daily use is back, CraveBreaker has a path for cutting back before a set quit date.

Add a quitline

Free expert support: 1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-877-44U-QUIT, or NCI's LiveHelp chat via Smokefree.gov.

Ask a doctor

Smokefree.gov notes quit-smoking medicines aren't FDA-approved for vaping, but a doctor can talk through whether one is right for you.

Who CraveBreaker is not for

If you're under 18, go to teen.smokefree.gov instead; CraveBreaker is built for adults. If you want someone to talk to right now, a quitline will do more than any app. And if you're dealing with heavy low mood or anxiety since quitting, talk to a doctor; smokefree.gov has guides on stress, anxiety and depression around vaping too.

One design decision we made on purpose: when you log a vape, CraveBreaker asks what happened and what you'll try next. It never shows a broken streak, a sad face or a red number. Shame is a trigger too.

Questions after a slip

Is one hit after quitting vaping a relapse?

Usually not. The NHS calls "just one puff" a lapse, a minor slip to shrug off. A relapse is going back to using regularly.

Do I have to start my quit count over after a slip?

Your vape-free stretch restarts, but the days you already stayed off still happened. CraveBreaker keeps your original quit date, total vape-free days and earned milestones when you record a vape.

How soon should I try again after relapsing?

The NHS suggests setting a new quit date that feels right, ideally within the next two weeks, so you have time to plan. You can also restart today if you feel ready.

Why do I keep relapsing on vaping?

Common reasons are stress, tough situations and triggers you didn't plan for. The NHS also names trying to quit using willpower alone. Logging each slip with what was happening is the fastest way to see your own pattern.

Can I get free help after a relapse?

Yes. In the US, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for free quitline support, or use the free tools at smokefree.gov. CraveBreaker's craving tools and quitline links are free too.

Should I switch to cigarettes to get through cravings?

No. Smokefree.gov advises planning not to use any tobacco products while you quit vaping, and quitting those too if you use them.

Make it a habit with CraveBreaker
