How do you quit vaping without going back to smoking?
Plan for your old smoking triggers as well as your vaping ones, choose a replacement that is neither, and get support lined up before your quit day, because no trial has yet measured whether quitting vapes leads people back to cigarettes. That gap comes from the 2025 Cochrane review of quit-vaping interventions, the most complete summary so far.
Short version: what helps is known only weakly, and relapse to smoking is not measured at all. Plan as if it could happen.
What the evidence says, question by question
Every row is checked against the source on the date at the top of the page. "Certainty" is the review's own rating where one exists.
| Question | Finding | Source | Certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is vaping safer than going back to cigarettes? | Likely far less harmful than smoking, but not risk-free. No tar or carbon monoxide. | NHS, 2026 | Official guidance |
| Does anything help people quit vaping? | Text-message programs helped young people aged 13 to 24 quit more often than minimal support (2 trials, 4,091 people). | Cochrane, 2025 | Low |
| What about prescription medicine? | Varenicline doubled quit rates at six months in one trial of 140 people. Ask a prescriber. | Cochrane, 2025 | Low |
| Do patches or gradual cutting down work? | Each tested in one tiny trial (16 and 17 people). Inconclusive. | Cochrane, 2025 | Very low |
| Does quitting vaping send people back to cigarettes? | Not measured. No trial tracked relapse to smoking at six months or longer. | Cochrane, 2025 | No data |
| Are people who also smoke more hooked on vapes? | In 1,009 adult vapers, those who smoked cigarettes scored higher on vape dependence. | Morean et al., 2019 | One study |
The best-tested quit-vaping support is a text-message program; the least-tested question is the one ex-smokers worry about most.
Honest limits of this roundup
- The Cochrane review covers 9 randomised trials and 5,209 people. Most included some former smokers, but results weren't reported separately for them.
- Most trials enrolled young people. If you're 45 and smoked for twenty years, the findings may fit you less well.
- "Not measured" is not the same as "doesn't happen". It means nobody has the number yet.
- CraveBreaker is a self-help tool for adults. It doesn't measure anything about your body, and it isn't treatment.

Where CraveBreaker fits
We built CraveBreaker for the moment a craving hits, which for an ex-smoker is also the moment a cigarette starts to look reasonable. Tap I have a craving and you get a 90-second reset, a Pattern Break puzzle, a craving timer, the reasons you wrote, and a link to free quitline support. Every one of those is free, with no account. If you vape after quitting, you record it without judgment: your original quit date, total vape-free days and milestones stay.

Free covers every craving tool, your plan, the craving log, journal, basic patterns, a savings estimate and the first 7 plan missions. Premium adds all 30 missions, the 66-day path, morning, social and evening preparation sessions and detailed insights, as weekly, annual (3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers) or one-time lifetime purchases.
Who should pick something else
If you want a person to talk to, a quitline beats any app: 1-800-QUIT-NOW is free in the U.S., and smokefree.gov has text programs, which is the support type with the strongest quit-vaping evidence so far. If you're considering varenicline or patches, start with a doctor or pharmacist; we don't give medication advice. And if you are smoking again already, that is a different quit, and smokefree.gov has a plan for it.
Ex-smoker quit-vaping questions
Will I start smoking again if I quit vaping?
Nobody can say for sure yet. The 2025 Cochrane review of quit-vaping trials found no study that measured relapse to smoking six months or more after quitting vaping. Planning for your old smoking triggers is the practical safeguard.
Should ex-smokers quit vaping at all?
That's your call, ideally with your doctor. The NHS (2026) says vaping is likely far less harmful than smoking but not completely risk-free. Many people want to be free of nicotine altogether; the priority is not to swap back to cigarettes along the way.
Is it better to cut down slowly or stop all at once?
The evidence can't settle it yet. The 2025 Cochrane review found only one small trial of nicotine reduction (17 people) and called the result inconclusive. Pick the method you can stick with, and make the plan before the quit day.
Can I use nicotine patches to quit vaping?
Ask a doctor or pharmacist. The Cochrane review (2025) found one tiny trial of combination nicotine replacement for vaping, with very low-certainty results. That is a lack of evidence, not evidence it fails.
What withdrawal symptoms will I get?
Mayo Clinic (2025) lists strong cravings, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, trouble focusing or sleeping, low mood, increased hunger and constipation. Free support: smokefree.gov or 1-800-QUIT-NOW in the U.S.
Does CraveBreaker work for people who used to smoke?
It's built for anyone quitting vapes, and you choose your own path: preparing to quit, quit recently, staying vape-free, or cutting back before a quit date. Your triggers and reasons are your own, so old smoking triggers fit in the same plan.
