Am I addicted to vaping?
If you vape within 30 minutes of waking, have tried to stop and couldn't, or feel withdrawal when you go without, nicotine probably has a real hold on you. Those are among the signs of nicotine dependence listed by Mayo Clinic (2025). The quiz below asks all five.
11:40 p.m., the pod is nearly empty
You notice because you've checked it three times since dinner. Tomorrow you have an early start, and the first thing you'll reach for is the vape on the nightstand, before your phone, before water. You don't feel "addicted". You feel normal. That's the thing about a habit that runs on nicotine: it feels like your own idea every time.
Honest limits, before you take it
- This is a self-check based on published signs, not a validated clinical scale or a diagnosis.
- Mayo Clinic's list was written about nicotine dependence from smoking. We apply it to vapes because most deliver nicotine; the NHS (2026) describes choosing a vape by nicotine strength.
- Nothing you tap is stored or sent. Refresh and it's gone.
- CraveBreaker itself doesn't measure anything about your body; it shows what you record.
The 5-question vaping dependence check
Do you usually vape within 30 minutes of waking up?
Have you seriously tried to stop, and started again?
When you go without, do you get strong cravings, irritability, restlessness or trouble sleeping?
Do you keep vaping even though it's causing a problem you care about?
Do you skip plans, or leave early, because you can't vape there?
Answer all five to see your result.
This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.
What to do with your result
Whatever you scored, the hard moment is the same: the next craving. CraveBreaker opens on I have a craving. No account, no paywall, no questionnaire. The 90-second reset, Pattern Break puzzle, a 1, 3 or 5-minute timer and the reasons you wrote yourself are all free. Log each craving in seconds and patterns appear once there's enough data to mean something.

Who this is not for
Under 18? CraveBreaker is built for adults. teen.smokefree.gov is made for you. Want medication to help? Talk to a doctor or pharmacist; a 2025 Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence for varenicline and for text-message programs, and too little evidence to judge nicotine replacement for quitting vapes yet. Vaping addiction questions
How do I know if I'm addicted to my vape?
Look at behaviour, not just how often you vape. Mayo Clinic (2025) lists failed quit attempts, using nicotine within 30 minutes of waking, withdrawal symptoms when you stop, carrying on despite health problems, and giving up activities where you can't use it.
Is vaping as addictive as smoking?
Both deliver nicotine, and nicotine is what drives dependence. Researchers built a dedicated E-cigarette Dependence Scale (Morean et al., 2019) and found higher scores in daily users and in people using nicotine e-liquid.
What does it mean if I vape right after waking up?
How soon you use nicotine after waking is one of the most-used markers of dependence. Mayo Clinic (2025) treats within 30 minutes as a sign, and Morean et al. (2019) found their vaping scale tracked closely with time to first morning use.
What withdrawal symptoms should I expect?
Mayo Clinic (2025) lists strong cravings, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, trouble focusing or sleeping, low mood, increased hunger and constipation. Free help is at smokefree.gov.
Is this quiz a diagnosis?
No. It's a self-check built on published signs, not a validated clinical scale. A doctor, pharmacist or quitline can help you work out what you need.
