Is it better to quit vaping cold turkey or gradually?
Neither method has been shown to win: in a 2019 Cochrane review of 51 smoking trials, people who cut down first quit at similar rates to people who stopped all at once, and no trial has settled the question for vaping yet. The Cochrane review by Lindson and colleagues (2019) rated that comparison moderate certainty. So the useful question is not which method is best, but which one you will actually follow to a date.
Pick the method you will finish. Then put a date on it.
| Cold turkey | Cut down first | |
|---|---|---|
| What it looks like | Prepare for a few days, then stop completely on your quit date. | Vape less on a schedule, then stop completely on a later quit date. |
| Good fit if | You like clean breaks and a hard rule is easier than a dimmer switch. | Stopping all at once feels impossible, or you tried it and it fell apart in a day. |
| Watch out for | The first days carry all the cravings at once. Have tools ready before day one. | "Less" with no end date. The plan only counts if it ends in a quit day. |
| Evidence (smoking trials) | Similar quit rates either way ({c}). Cutting down with varenicline or fast-acting nicotine replacement looked better than cutting down alone. | |

A mini story: two attempts, one calendar
The first try was cold turkey on a Monday, chosen at 11 PM on Sunday with no plan. By Tuesday lunch the vape was back, and the whole thing felt like proof of weakness. It wasn't. It was a method chosen in a hurry.
The second try started with a date three weeks out. No vaping in the car from week one, none at the desk from week two, and the stress trigger written down with what to do instead. Quit day still had cravings. It also had a plan for them.
What CraveBreaker gives either method

How to start either method in 3 steps
- Choose your path. CraveBreaker's two-minute plan asks which path fits: preparing to quit, quit recently, staying vape-free or cutting back before a quit date.
- Name your triggers. Coffee, driving, stress, work breaks. Pick coping strategies and write your reasons in your own words.
- Use the craving button. "I have a craving" opens a 90-second reset, a Pattern Break puzzle, a timer and your reasons. No account, no paywall.
Cold turkey vs tapering: common questions
Is it better to quit vaping cold turkey?
Not clearly. The best evidence comes from smoking: a Cochrane review by Lindson and colleagues (2019) of 51 trials found people asked to stop all at once were not more likely to quit than people who cut down first (moderate-certainty evidence). Trials comparing the two methods for vaping specifically are still missing.
How do I taper off vaping?
Pick a quit date first, then cut down toward it: fewer sessions, longer gaps, no vaping in one place at a time (the car, the bed). The date matters more than the exact steps. Without a date, cutting down can turn into vaping a bit less forever.
Can nicotine replacement help me quit vaping?
Possibly. CDC (2024) says a health care provider may suggest medications to help with withdrawal and cravings. In the smoking trials, people who cut down while using varenicline or fast-acting nicotine replacement appeared more likely to quit (Cochrane review by Lindson and colleagues (2019)). Ask a doctor or pharmacist; we give no dosing advice.
How long do vape cravings last after quitting?
Smokefree.gov (accessed 2026) describes cravings to vape as common but temporary, fading the longer you stay quit. No reliable source gives a fixed number of minutes, which is why CraveBreaker's craving timer lets you pick 1, 3 or 5 minutes or your own length.
What if I slip after quitting cold turkey?
Smokefree.gov (accessed 2026) suggests treating a slip as a temporary setback, not a failure. In CraveBreaker, a recorded vape keeps your original quit date, total vape-free days and earned milestones.
Is there free help to quit vaping?
Yes. Trained quit coaches answer 1-800-QUIT-NOW at no cost (CDC (2024)), and SmokefreeTXT sends free support by text. Every CraveBreaker craving tool is free, too.
Honest limits
- CraveBreaker is a self-help tool for adults, not medical advice or treatment, and it has not been tested in a clinical trial.
- It does not set a taper schedule for you or tell you how much nicotine to use. That is a conversation for a doctor, pharmacist or quitline.
- Free: every craving tool, your plan, craving log, journal, progress record and the first 7 plan missions. Premium (weekly, annual with a 3-day trial for eligible new subscribers, or lifetime) adds all 30 missions, the 66-day path and detailed insights.
One design decision we made: a recorded vape never wipes your quit date or your total vape-free days. Resetting to zero punishes exactly the people who are still trying.
Who should pick something else
If you are under 18, teen.smokefree.gov is built for you; CraveBreaker is for adults. If you want a coach on the phone, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. If you vape to manage strong anxiety or low mood, talk to a doctor before your quit day; in a crisis, call or text 988.
