How long does Thanksgiving dinner take to digest?
On average, about six hours to pass through the stomach and small intestine, then up to 36 to 48 hours in the colon. Those are Mayo Clinic's figures (2025) for digestion in general. A Thanksgiving plate runs through the same system as a Tuesday sandwich; Mayo notes the timing shifts with what you eat and how much.
So the meal you finish at 4 p.m. on Thursday is, on average, through your stomach and small intestine by around 10 p.m., and still working through your colon on Black Friday. That's the whole idea of the clock above: not a calorie count, just a sense of where dinner actually is.
Thanksgiving dinner isn't a special kind of digestion. It's the ordinary kind, with seconds.
4:00 p.m.: the first bite
Digestion starts before you swallow. Chewing breaks food apart and saliva carries an enzyme that starts on starch, which is why rolls and mashed potatoes get a head start (NIDDK, National Institutes of Health). Swallowing hands everything to the esophagus, where waves of muscle called peristalsis move it down.
4:30 p.m.: the stomach mixes
The stomach's muscles churn the meal with acid and enzymes, and protein from the turkey starts breaking down. Then the stomach empties slowly, a little at a time, into the small intestine (NIDDK).
Evening: the small intestine does the heavy lifting
Here the pancreas adds enzymes for carbohydrate, fat and protein, and bile from the liver and gallbladder helps with the gravy and butter. The walls of the small intestine absorb water and nutrients into the blood (NIDDK).
Friday and beyond: the colon
What's left moves into the large intestine, which absorbs more water and turns waste into stool. Its bacteria break down remaining nutrients and make vitamin K (NIDDK). Mayo puts this stage at up to 36 to 48 hours on average.
Thanksgiving digestion questions
How long does it take to digest a big meal?
On average, food takes about six hours to move through the stomach and small intestine, and the colon stage can take up to 36 to 48 hours, according to Mayo Clinic (2025). Mayo adds that timing varies with the type and amount of food.
Where is the turkey digested?
Protein is broken down in the stomach and small intestine, helped by enzymes from the pancreas, ending up as amino acids (NIDDK, NIH).
Where are gravy and butter digested?
Fats are broken down in the small intestine by pancreatic enzymes, with bile from the liver and gallbladder helping, into fatty acids and glycerol (NIDDK, NIH).
Why does digestion start before I swallow the stuffing?
Saliva contains an enzyme that starts breaking down starch in your mouth (NIDDK, NIH). Bread, potatoes and rolls get a head start while you're still chewing.
Is the live clock accurate for me?
No clock can be. It shows the average timings Mayo Clinic gives. Your own timing depends on what and how much you ate, and on you.

- The clock uses average timings. Your own digestion can run faster or slower.
- Mayo gives one combined figure for the stomach and small intestine, so the clock doesn't split them by the hour, and neither do we.
