  1. 1/4Counts toward the CDC's 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.

  2. 2/4Meets the CDC's 'muscle-strengthening on 2 or more days a week' guideline.

  3. 3/4Proposed by a 2024 review as an add-on to GLP-1-type drugs to help preserve lean mass.

Walking vs strength training on GLP-1: which matters more?

You don't have to choose: walking covers the aerobic part of the guidelines, and strength training is the part that targets muscle, which is what people on GLP-1 medication most often worry about losing. If you only have time for one new thing this month, and you already walk, add two short strength sessions a week.

This is general information, not medical advice. Sturdy is for adults using prescribed medication under medical care. Talk to your clinician before starting or changing exercise.

Honest limits of the evidence

Who should pick something else

If you love running and want pace, distance and heart-rate zones, a running app is your tool; Sturdy has no cardio tracking. If you are not on weight-management medication, a general strength app will fit better. And if you have a recent fracture, dizziness or pain, see your clinician first. Sturdy says the same in its own listing.

What a week with both looks like

MonStrength 20
TueWalk 30
WedWalk 30
ThuStrength 20
FriWalk 30
SatWalk 30
SunWalk 30

That's 150 minutes of walking plus two strength days: both halves of the CDC (2023) guideline. If 20 minutes of strength is too much on a bad week, Sturdy's Quick Movement session is about five minutes. Walking for your heart, strength for your muscles, both for your week.

A made-up example

Month three on a GLP-1. The scale is moving and the daily 40-minute walk is the best part of the day. Then carrying the laundry upstairs starts to feel harder than it used to.

Nothing changes about the walk. Two evenings a week, a 15-minute session gets added: chair squats, counter push-ups, a supported hinge, a carry with two grocery bags. Sore knee one evening? Flag it before the session and those movements get swapped out.

Eight weeks later the 30-second chair stand check-in is written down twice, side by side. Not a medical result, just a number to bring to the next appointment.

Questions about walking and lifting on GLP-1

Is walking enough on GLP-1 medication?

Walking is good for you and counts toward the CDC (2023) aerobic target. On its own it doesn't meet the muscle-strengthening part of the guideline, which is the part most linked to keeping lean mass during weight loss.

Do GLP-1 drugs cause muscle loss?

Some of the weight lost is lean mass. In the STEP 1 trial, New England Journal of Medicine (2021), total lean body mass fell in absolute terms in a body-composition subgroup, even though the proportion of lean mass relative to body weight went up. A 2024 review put typical lean-mass loss with these drugs at around 10%.

Should I do cardio or weights first?

For most beginners the order matters less than doing both across the week. Many people walk on non-strength days. Ask your clinician if you have heart, joint or balance concerns.

How long should strength sessions be?

There is no single answer. Sturdy offers Quick Movement (about five minutes), Standard Strength and Recovery and Mobility sessions, with free sessions up to 30 minutes and Pro up to 45.

Does Sturdy track my walks?

No. Sturdy plans and logs strength sessions, protein and optional check-ins. Keep using your phone's step count or a walking app for walks.

Does protein matter as much as exercise?

Both show up together in the 2025 joint nutrition advisory from four obesity and nutrition societies, which lists adequate protein and strength training to preserve lean mass among its priorities.
