Short answer: no. Tap what you own; the phone builds a home session from it.

Do you need a gym to strength train on GLP-1?

No. You can meet the adult strength guideline at home with your body weight, a sturdy chair, filled water bottles or resistance bands; a gym is useful later for heavier loads, but it is not where you have to start.

Why strength at all? A joint advisory from four obesity and nutrition societies (2025) lists adequate protein and strength training to preserve lean mass among its priorities for people on GLP-1 medicines. The muscle doesn't know whether the weight came from a rack or a two-litre bottle; it knows effort.

What counts as strength training?

The CDC (2023) asks for at least 2 days a week of muscle-strengthening activity that works all major muscle groups: legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms.

The NHS activity guidelines (2024) list includes lifting weights, working with resistance bands, body-weight exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups, carrying heavy shopping bags and heavy gardening. Most of that list needs no membership.

How to make home moves harder

Body-weight training still progresses. Slow the lowering half of each rep to a count of three. Add reps before you add load. Move from a wall press-up to a kitchen counter, then a low bench. Fill a bigger bottle, or carry two shopping bags instead of one. When none of that feels like effort any more, that is the honest moment to look at dumbbells or a gym.

Who this is not for

  • Anyone with a recent injury or fracture, dizziness, or pain: check with your clinician first.
  • Experienced lifters chasing heavy progress. You will outgrow bottles fast; go to the gym.
  • Anyone not on GLP-1 or other prescribed weight-management medication. Sturdy is built for adults who are, under medical care.

Home kit coverage check

Tick everything you have. We map it against the seven major muscle groups using moves named on the NHS strength exercises (2024) page and the NHS activity list.

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.

    Honest limits

Sturdy builds a plan from the equipment you pick, but the gym-equipment movements, sessions up to 45 minutes and 12-week and all-time progress are Sturdy Pro (weekly or yearly). Free covers weekly planning, all three workout types, the core movement library, sessions up to 30 minutes, protein logging and check-ins.

A decision we made: difficulty only changes when you choose. If home moves feel easy, you move them up; the app never pushes you.

    No-gym strength on GLP-1: questions

Can I build or keep muscle at home on GLP-1 medication?

Home training can meet the strength guideline: the CDC (2023) asks adults for muscle-strengthening on at least 2 days a week across the major muscle groups, and the NHS activity guidelines (2024) counts body-weight exercises and resistance bands. Whether it is enough for you is a question for your care team.

What equipment do I need to start?

Very little. The NHS strength exercises (2024) page uses a solid chair without wheels and suggests filled water bottles as light weights. Bands and dumbbells give you more room to progress later.

How many days a week should I strength train?

The CDC (2023) guideline is at least 2 days a week of muscle-strengthening activity that works legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. Start below that if your clinician advises it.

Is a gym better than home workouts on GLP-1?

A gym gives you heavier loads and machines, which helps once body-weight moves get easy. It is not required to start, and a plan you actually do at home beats a membership you avoid.

Does Sturdy work without a gym?

Yes. You pick your equipment when you set up your week, and the free core movement library covers home sessions up to 30 minutes. Gym-equipment movements and sessions up to 45 minutes are part of Sturdy Pro.

Should I talk to my doctor before starting?

Yes, especially with a medical condition, recent injury or fracture, dizziness or pain. Sturdy is a self-tracking tool for adults on prescribed GLP-1 or other weight-management medication under medical care; it gives no medical or medication advice.
