How do you stay hydrated on a 12-hour shift?
Anchor each refill to a break you are sure to get (handover, first round, meal, the 3 a.m. lull) and drink most of a bottle at each one, because "sip all shift" falls apart the moment the unit gets busy.
That's not just a hunch. In a study of emergency department staff, Alomar and colleagues, International Journal of Emergency Medicine (2013) found most physicians, and fewer but still some nurses, had decreased hydration by the end of their shift, and lower fluid intake was one of the factors. On a long shift, the plan has to survive the worst hour, not the best one.
Honest limits
No rota mode. Dropkin has wake and sleep hours, not shift patterns. On nights you change those hours yourself, or pause reminders.
Your unit's rules come first. If phones and watches stay in a locker, reminders can't reach you. Log the bottles in one go on your break.
No hydration advice. You choose the goal. Dropkin is not a medical device and does not decide how much you need.
Free vs Pro. The tracker, reminders, watch app and 30-day history are free. Pro adds worlds, styles and longer history.
12-hour shift hydration questions
How much water should a nurse drink on a 12-hour shift?
There is no official per-shift number. Mayo Clinic (2026) says needs depend on health, age, activity, where you live and the weather, and the NHS (2023) gives 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day as a guide. A 12-hour shift is half your day or more, so most of your fluid lands inside it. Set your own goal, with your clinician if you have a condition that affects fluids.
Is dehydration at the end of a shift common?
In one study by Alomar and colleagues, International Journal of Emergency Medicine (2013), 43 emergency department physicians and nurses were checked across 172 shifts. The authors concluded that most physicians, and to a lesser extent nurses, had decreased hydration status by the end of the shift. Less fluid intake was one of the factors linked to it.
How do I know if I'm drinking enough at work?
Mayo Clinic (2026) lists two everyday signs that you are probably getting enough: you don't often feel thirsty, and your urine is colorless or light yellow. Dark urine can mean you need more.
Do coffee and tea count on a night shift?
Yes. The NHS (2023) says tea and coffee count toward your daily fluid, along with water, lower-fat milk and lower-sugar drinks.
What if I can't carry my phone on the unit?
Then plan refills around your breaks and log them in one batch when you get to your phone. Dropkin lets you log a whole saved bottle in one tap, or a ½ or ¼, and edit times in History later.
Can Dropkin reminders follow a night-shift schedule?
Reminders only arrive during the wake and sleep hours you set. You can change those hours, pause reminders for a while, or turn them off. There is no automatic rota or shift-pattern feature.
Is Dropkin free?
The water tracker is free: unlimited logging, saved vessels, reminders, Hydration Pace, widgets, Apple Watch, Shortcuts and 30-day history. Optional Pro adds the other worlds, extra styles and 90-day and full-year history.
Three ways to track water on shift
Honest read: if you truly can't carry anything, the marked bottle wins. Many people use both. This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.
How it works in 3 steps
- 1Save your shift bottle. Enter its real size once and pin it. On the Apple Watch it becomes the big button.
- 2Set your hours for this rota. Days, nights or swing: set wake and sleep so reminders only arrive when you're up.
- 3Tap at each break. One tap logs the whole bottle; ½ and ¼ sit beside it. Hit your goal and the reminders stop.
Who this is not for
- Anyone on a fluid restriction from their care team. Follow that, not a tracker.
- People who want a coach to tell them how much to drink. We left that out on purpose.
- Android users. Dropkin is iPhone and Apple Watch only.
Context worth knowing on any shift comes from CDC (2026): water needs go up in hot weather, with more physical activity, and with fever, diarrhea or vomiting. A busy shift on a warm unit is exactly that kind of day.
