What are vape withdrawal symptoms in the first week?
Updated November 2026
Expect some mix of cravings, irritability, poor sleep, foggy thinking, restlessness, low mood and extra hunger, usually strongest in the first few days or weeks. That list comes from Smokefree.gov (accessed November 2026), which says the worst symptoms only last a few days to a couple of weeks. The CDC (2024) says quitting vaping is likely similar to quitting smoking, because both involve nicotine.
Withdrawal is loud, but it is temporary, and every symptom on the list has something that helps.
How the 7-day log works, in 3 steps
- Each evening, one row. Tally today's cravings, circle the strongest from 1 to 5, tick the symptoms you noticed.
- Write what helped. A walk, a snack, a text to a friend. Two words is enough.
- On day 4 and day 7, read back. You are looking for your own pattern: the time of day, the place, the thing that worked twice.
Page two is a cut-out card with the seven symptoms and what helps each, for your pocket or the spot where the vape used to live. Two pages, US Letter, prints fine in black and white.

All seven symptoms and what helps
Scratch or tap each one. The advice under each card is from Smokefree.gov (accessed November 2026).
Irritability
Remind yourself why you quit. Sticking with it is what eases it.
Trouble sleeping
Keep the same bedtime and wake time, keep screens out of the bedroom, and limit caffeine, alcohol and big meals late.
Foggy thinking
Foggy thinking is temporary. If you are not using a quit medication, ask a provider whether one fits.
Restlessness
Walk, do a chore, move. Cut back on caffeine.
Low mood
Do something you enjoy and reach out to someone. If it gets worse, talk to a health professional; in a crisis call or text 988 (U.S.).
Hunger
Keep crunchy snacks near you, like carrots or raw nuts, to keep hands and mouth busy.
Honest limits
- We do not publish an hour-by-hour or day-by-day symptom timeline. The sources we trust do not give one, and bodies differ.
- Paper does not remind you. If you want a nudge at 9 p.m. to fill in the row, an app or an alarm will do that better.
- CraveBreaker is a self-help tool for adults. It does not measure anything about your body and is not treatment.
- In the app, every craving tool is free. Premium (optional) adds all 30 missions, the 66-day path and deeper trigger insights.

First-week withdrawal questions
How long do vape withdrawal symptoms last?
Smokefree.gov (accessed November 2026) says the worst nicotine withdrawal symptoms usually last a few days to a couple of weeks, and that cravings and other symptoms fade over time if you stay off nicotine. It does not give a fixed day-by-day schedule, and neither do we.
Is vape withdrawal the same as cigarette withdrawal?
Both involve nicotine. The CDC (2024) says quitting vaping is likely similar to quitting smoking because both involve nicotine addiction and can cause withdrawal.
Why is the first week the hardest?
Symptoms tend to be strongest in the first few days or weeks, and Smokefree.gov (accessed November 2026) notes the first week is when people are most at risk of going back.
Can medicine help with withdrawal?
Possibly. The CDC (2024) says health care providers may suggest medications to help manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Ask a doctor or pharmacist what fits you.
What if I vape during the first week?
A slip is not starting over. Smokefree.gov says a slip does not put you back to square one. Write down what happened on the log and pick your next step.
Is the printable really free?
Yes. No email, no sign-up. Print it, copy it, share it.
Who this is not for
If you are under 18, smokefree.gov has teen programs built for you; this log is written for adults. If you have severe low mood, chest pain or any symptom that frightens you, skip the log and talk to a health professional today. And if you would rather talk than write, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free coaching, as the CDC (2024) lists.
Make it a habit with CraveBreaker
The paper log is the slow version. The app is the fast one: tap "I have a craving" for a 90-second reset, a small puzzle or a timer, and log the craving in seconds afterward. Patterns only appear once you have logged enough to mean something.

One decision we made: if you vape and record it, your original quit date and total vape-free days stay. The first week is hard enough without a counter snapping back to zero.
Print the log. Keep the app close.
