How do you stop vaping when you drink?
Decide before the first drink: how many drinks, what you'll do when the urge hits, and when you'll leave, because the decision gets harder with every drink. Smokefree.gov (National Cancer Institute) calls alcohol a common trigger and cause of slips, and suggests avoiding it for a few weeks after quitting if you can. If you are going out anyway, the plan does the deciding for you.

Who this is not for
If drinking itself feels out of control, or you are drinking to cope with withdrawal, a vaping app is the wrong first tool: talk to a doctor or call a quitline. CraveBreaker is a self-help tool for adults. It does not measure anything about your health and it is not treatment. And if you want nicotine replacement advice, a pharmacist or the free quitline coaches are the right people to ask.
Three ways to handle a drinking night
Skip it
Stay away from alcohol for the first few weeks, as Smokefree.gov suggests. The most reliable option, and the hardest socially.
Go, with rules
Set a drink limit, a leave time and a craving move before you go. Works best when someone you're with knows.
Go, no plan
Relies on willpower after drinks. This is where most of the "just one" stories start.
The night-out plan in 3 steps
- Before you leave. Write your drink limit and leave time. Pick your craving move: the 3-minute timer, a walk outside, texting a friend. Leave your vape at home, or bin it.
- When the urge hits. Move first, decide later. Step away from the table, start a timer, breathe slowly ten times (Smokefree.gov's tip). Cravings are temporary.
- The morning after. Log what happened, honestly: where, how strong, what you tried. Patterns show up after a few entries. If you slipped, adjust the plan and keep your quit date.

Questions about drinking and quitting vaping
Why do I want to vape more when I drink?
Alcohol is one of the most common triggers. Smokefree.gov (National Cancer Institute, accessed 2026) calls alcohol a common trigger and cause of slips. Drinking also lowers the bar on decisions you made sober, and bars and parties are often where people vape together.
Should I stop drinking while I quit vaping?
For the first few weeks it helps a lot. Smokefree.gov suggests staying away from alcohol for a few weeks after quitting. If that is not realistic, fewer drinks, a shorter night and a plan made in advance are the next best thing.
How long does a vape craving last?
Cravings are temporary and fade the longer you stay quit, says Smokefree.gov. Its suggestion for the moment itself: breathe slowly, ten times, until the craving passes.
I vaped on a night out. Have I failed?
No. A slip is a single event, not the end of a quit. Smokefree.gov's guidance on slips is to look at what triggered it and get straight back to your plan. In CraveBreaker, your quit date, total vape-free days and earned milestones stay after you record a slip.
Where can I get free help to quit vaping?
In the US, 1-800-QUIT-NOW connects you with trained quit coaches at no cost (CDC, 2024). Truth Initiative runs a free text program: young people text DITCHVAPE to 88709, adults text QUIT to (202) 899-7550 (Truth Initiative).
Is CraveBreaker free?
